Barry Weir has sold the one-of-a-kind Aston Martin car that he designed and had built.

The unique Aston Martin Jet 2+2 car is the last vehicle ever to be built by legendary Italian coachbuilders Bertone.

The car was designed by Barry Weir on the back of a serviette as he waited for a flight at an airport.

Barry got the car officially approved by Aston Martin, with the car manufacturer originally planning to put the model into production.

The Jet 2+2 has now been sold to an unnamed private collector, based in England, who already has an impressive collection of Aston Martin and Lagonda vehicles.

Barry said: ‘After eight years and over 17,000 miles, I decided it was time to let someone else enjoy this special car.

‘It’s a stunning vehicle and a genuine one-off. Wherever I have driven the Jet 2+2 it has always gained admiring looks. Strangers have come up to me to ask about it.

‘At the time it was built it was the fastest shooting brake in the world at 200mph, reaching 60mph in about 5.3 seconds.

‘We had a lot of people show interest but in the end this chap turned out to be the only person who was able to match the asking price.

‘I’m sure the new owner will really enjoy the car.’

The Jet 2+2 is based on the Aston Martin Rapide platform but has a shooting brake and additional headroom for the back seats. There are a host of other unique features including a full length tinting glass roof and a sliding rear floor that sees the seats fold down to create a large boot space at the touch of a button.

The car shares 70 per cent of its DNA with the Rapide, including its 470bhp, 5.9-litre V12 engine.

The purchase price has not been revealed although it was previously up for sale for around £2 million.

Classic car dealership Classicmobilia finalised the deal in July.

Keith Riddington, owner of Classicmobilia, said: ‘It has been a pleasure and privilege working with Mr Weir and the Aston Martin Jet 2+2. Sometimes cars design just does not work, but Barry had this vision and it paid off.

‘The Jet is a stunning looking car with so many subtle little features which made the car so unique. It is a car which will never be forgotten.’Barry and Roma had to settle for a quiet celebration of their 50 years of marriage as the big day fell in the middle of Covid-19 lockdown.
