Heroic Act
Barry Weir hit the headlines after a selfless attempt to rescue a drowning man from the sea.
While walking his dog on Sandbanks beach, Barry spotted a man in a suit floundering in the freezing cold waters.
Barry called the coastguard but quickly realised that there was no time to waste.
Even though he was unable to swim, Barry waded into the icy sea and was engulfed in huge waves as he battled to get to the drowning man.
Despite the cold and waves crashing over his head, with no thought for his own safety, Barry managed to battle the elements and haul the man to the beach.
The emergency services arrived and treated the man but he sadly died.
Barry’s efforts became a lead story in the local media under the headline: ‘Hero Grandfather In Surf Rescue Attempt’.
