'When I first saw the castle on the front of Country Life magazine I knew it was something special. When I saw the castle in the flesh I knew I needed to buy it, renovate it and breathe new life into the stunning monument.' - BARRY WEIR
Falling In Love With A Castle
When Barry Weir saw a picture of a lake side castle on the front of Country Life magazine he was instantly enchanted.
The monument in question was the stunning Dunderave Castle which sits on the shore of Loch Fyne.
Built in 1598, the castle was originally the seat of MacNaughton clan chief and had a distinctive round tower.
Barry told his wife, Roma, that he wanted a holiday to Scotland and insisted that they visit the castle during the trip.
Little did Roma know but Barry already had designs on buying the castle and creating a five star boutique hotel.
As soon as Barry visited Dunderave he knew he just had to buy it.
Months later the pair and their daughters were moved into the castle and they started on an extensive renovation project to restore the 16th century building back to its former glory.
It was the start of an incredible adventure which saw them host movie stars such as Michael Caine and Roger Moore as well as legendary director Michael Winner.
As well as a high end hotel the castle became a family home where the children enjoyed an idyllic lifestyle growing up on the shores of the loch.
Barry eventually went on to sell the castle but his renovation work helped to preserve the building for future generations to enjoy.
